Merz of Germany will propose Geneva as the location of ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Tuesday that he will choose Geneva as a location for ceasefire negotiations between Ukraine and Russia during a summit of about 30 nations on Thursday to discuss post-war guarantees for Ukraine.
“Geneva would be a suitable venue for a ceasefire agreement,” Merz and Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter stated during a scheduled news conference.
“The day after tomorrow, I will once again propose to the so-called ‘coalition of the willing’ that an invitation (to Geneva) be extended,” added the politician.
For months, the “coalition of the willing” formed by Britain and France has been negotiating ideas for what nations could provide militarily to Ukraine in order to prevent Russia from striking it again after a final peace.
France will hold a largely virtual conference Thursday to condemn what Ukraine’s allies perceive as Moscow’s lack of willingness to engage in negotiations and to examine the latest measures to extend security backing to Ukraine after a peace deal is reached.
