NACADA will raise the legal drinking age to 21 and prohibit influencers from endorsing alcohol

NACADA, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse, has prohibited celebrities and influencers from collaborating with alcohol companies.

The country’s approach to addressing alcohol misuse has changed significantly with the publication of Kenya’s National Alcohol Policy 2025. Social media influencers, media personalities, and celebrities who promote alcoholic products are prohibited by NACADA. Also prohibited by the rules is the endorsement of alcohol by anyone younger than 25.

Celebrities and social media influencers are now effective marketing tools that youthful followers frequently look up to. By promoting alcohol, they can glamorize drinking and link it to success and celebrity. The way that alcohol is presented as a component of a luxurious lifestyle poses questions, particularly for impressionable teens and young adults.

The policy focuses on prevention, control, and treatment in order to address alcohol misuse holistically. Increasing the legal drinking age from 18 to 21 years old, establishing areas near schools and places of worship that are free of both alcohol and drugs, and incorporating drug education into the curriculum are some of its main features. These initiatives seek to reduce alcohol intake, especially among youth, and postpone the onset of alcohol use.

Limiting access to alcohol is another important component of the approach. Alcohol establishments will not be allowed within 300 meters of residential areas and schools, and online sales, vending machines, and home deliveries will all be forbidden. These policies are intended to restrict access, particularly for children. Additionally, the program strengthens border surveillance to combat the trafficking of illegal and counterfeit alcohol.

Furthermore, alcohol containers must include health warnings in both Kiswahili and English.

The policy emphasizes the need of treatment and rehabilitation by acknowledging substance use disorders as a medical and psychosocial concern in addition to the previously outlined initiatives.

In addition to integrating alcohol-related treatment services into health programs like NHIF, NACADA intends to expand public treatment and rehabilitation facilities on a national and local level. With support networks like a round-the-clock helpline, NACADA is dedicated to assisting people with alcohol-related problems and offering recovery tools.

Additionally, it promotes cooperation between academic institutions and research organizations to investigate new topics such as vaping and synthetic pharmaceuticals.
