MTN Rwanda was penalized for network outages
The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) summoned MTN Rwanda earlier this week due to network problems, and as a result, the telco was hit with an administrative punishment.
The telecom’s leadership has been called in by RURA to resolve “persistent and recurring issues in its service delivery,” which include disruptions in voice conversations, SMS, USSD (used to access mobile money services), and interconnectivity between service providers, the company stated on Monday, July 28.
The regulator added in a follow-up statement on Thursday, July 31, that MTN Rwanda attended the meeting and gave an explanation of the issues affecting its services. The corporation was then warned by RURA officials to address the problems immediately.
According to the ICT law, the operator was also hit with an administrative fine, the regulator added.
RURA is authorized by ICT Article 15 to oversee authorized operators and administer administrative sanctions. The paper also highlights how the enforcement procedure should comply to the principles of non-discrimination, transparency, impartiality, and the right of defense of the service providers.
