FC Barcelona’s €44 million partnership with Dr. Congo is controversial

The Democratic Republic of the Congo and FC Barcelona have agreed to work together for four years and for €44 million. As part of the deal, the phrase “DR Congo – Heart of Africa” will be printed on the back of FC Barcelona’s training jerseys starting next season.

The deal includes youth training camps and an immersive culture exhibition at Camp Nou. Its goal is to make the country more well-known and attract more tourists from around the world. But many Congolese people have spoken out against the move, saying that the government’s goals are wrong because the national football league is constantly underfunded and people are still having a hard time at home.

Even though there has been criticism, the Congolese government says the project is an investment in the country’s image and future prospects. Didier Budimbu, the Minister of Sports, said that similar deals had been made with AC Milan and AS Monaco. He also said that the project was part of a larger effort to bring in tourists and foreign investors.

But because the country is still dealing with a civil war in the east and worries about human rights, some say the partnership could take attention away from important issues in the country and hide problems that are already there.
