The German military creates combat drones with a long range for deep strike capabilities

The German military is working on long-range warfare drones that can hit targets well into enemy territory.

Germany’s military is advancing its plans to create long-range attack drones that can strike deep within enemy territory, the Handelsblatt daily said Monday. 

In an increasingly complicated security environment, the action is part of an attempt to improve Germany’s military capabilities and fortify its defense posture.

According to reports, the German air force, the Luftwaffe, has asked top defense firms and startups to submit designs for deep-strike drone systems. The German military would be able to engage targets much beyond its immediate boundaries thanks to the concrete drone designs being developed by three consortia.

Several businesses are participating in the initiative, including Germany’s Rheinmetall, which has collaborated with drone expert Anduril, and Airbus Defence, which has joined with US company Kratos. The report also claims that Helsing, a startup based in Munich, is supporting the campaign.

Although there hasn’t been an official tender yet, the German Ministry of Defense has acknowledged that preliminary talks regarding the development of these drones have occurred. The ministry has not provided any additional information on the timing or the precise features that the drone systems are likely to have.

With tensions rising throughout the world, Germany’s efforts to modernize its military forces have advanced significantly with the creation of long-range combat drones. The German military is anticipated to benefit from increased operational flexibility and accuracy in carrying out long-range strike operations thanks to these drones.
