Bangladesh acquires 25 Boeing aircraft in an effort to lower US tariffs

Bangladesh has placed an order for 25 aircraft from Boeing (BA.N) and has increased imports of essential American goods to ease trade tensions and reduce the high tariffs set by the Trump administration, a senior official stated on Sunday.

The actions are components of a larger strategy aimed at reducing a $6 billion U.S. trade deficit with Bangladesh and preventing an impending 35% tariff increase that has unsettled the nation’s export sector, particularly the garments industry, which faces the threat of diminished competitiveness in one of its key markets.

“We require new aircraft as soon as possible, ideally within the next few years,” Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman informed reporters. “At first, there were 14 planes — now it’s 25,” he stated, discussing a previous plan to acquire aircraft from the U.S.-based manufacturer.

In addition to the aircraft agreement, Bangladesh is increasing its imports of wheat, soybean oil, and cotton from the United States. A new agreement signed earlier this month will result in the country importing 700,000 tonnes of U.S. wheat each year for the next five years.

Officials are optimistic that these actions will enhance trade relations with Washington and mitigate the effects of the Trump administration’s tariff policies.
