Arsenal Completes Signing Sporting Striker Viktor Gyökeres
Viktor Gyökeres, a Swedish striker from Sporting of Portugal, has officially joined Premier League team Arsenal.
Viktor Gyökeres, a Swedish striker from Portuguese champion Sporting Lisbon, has officially joined Arsenal on a five-year contract, the Premier League team confirmed on Saturday.
According to British media, Arsenal agreed to pay a set fee of £55 million for the prolific 27-year-old forward, with a further £8 million in possible add-ons, even if the financial terms were not formally revealed.
Ahead of the upcoming season, manager Mikel Arteta praised the signing as a major addition to the team.
In a statement, Arteta said, “We are incredibly happy to welcome Viktor Gyökeres to the club.” “His goal contributions speak for themselves, and his availability and performance consistency have been exceptional.”
As the team looks to finally win the Premier League after coming second in the last three seasons, bolstering the offense was a primary goal for Arsenal this summer. Arsenal scored 17 less goals and finished 10 points behind champions Liverpool last season.
Until injuries kept them out early in the season, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz shared striking responsibilities because there was no clear number nine for the majority of the campaign. During the last stretch, Mikel Merino, a midfielder, was used as an emergency forward.
Gyökeres comes after an incredible time at Sporting, where he spent almost £20 million after leaving Coventry City in 2023. In just 102 games with the Lisbon team, he recorded 28 assists and scored 97 goals.
He helped Sporting win both the league and the cup last season alone, scoring 54 goals in 52 games across all competitions. A Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City was part of his outstanding performance.
The Sweden international will join the team on their preseason tour of Asia while wearing the number 14 shirt. He previously had a brief stint with Brighton & Hove Albion.
In addition to goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, midfielders Christian Nørgaard and Martin Zubimendi, and winger Noni Madueke, Gyökeres is Arsenal’s fifth summer acquisition.
