Bill Self, the Kansas coach, was admitted to the hospital and had two stents placed
The Kansas Jayhawks announced Thursday that Bill Self, the team’s most successful men’s basketball coach, had been admitted to the hospital and had two stents placed.
Leading the Jayhawks in their last summer session Thursday morning was Self, 62, who has been their coach since 2003. At that point, he “felt unwell and experienced some concerning symptoms,” according to Kansas officials, and was sent to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
“The two stent implantation procedure went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery,” the institution said.
“He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.”
In the past, self’s health has raised concerns. A cardiac issue kept him out of the March 2023 NCAA Tournament and the Big 12 conference tournament. After experiencing tightness in his chest, he had a conventional heart catheterization. Self’s clogged arteries were also treated with two stents.
Over his 22 seasons as head coach of Kansas, Self has accumulated a 609-156 record and two national titles. Under Self, the Jayhawks have won eight conference tournament crowns and sixteen regular-season conference titles.
