Siwelee Football Club purchased Supersport United
Siwelele Football Club (Pty) Ltd has acquired SuperSport United, a team in the South African Betway Premiership.
On July 3, the club posted a statement on its website and social media accounts announcing the sale.
The announcement said, “Siwelele F.C. was awarded the rights to purchase the three-time Premiership winners following a closed bidding process, pending approval by the PSL Executive Committee.”
Since the 1996–1997 season, SuperSport United has played in the PSL. In the late 2000s, they won three straight league titles (2007–2008, 2008–2009, and 2009–2010), and in the 2011–12 season, they won the Nedbank Cup.
After winning the Telkom Knockout in 2014–15 and going on to win back-to-back Nedbank Cup titles in 2015–16 and 2016–17, the club’s cup success continued in the 2010s. The team was awarded MTN8 Cup Champions in 2017–18, and they did it again in 2019–20.
“The club’s sale coincides with strategic changes SuperSport is making to maintain its position as Africa’s largest broadcaster and a top global rival. In order for SuperSport to continue being the top sports content provider on the continent and a pioneer in broadcast innovation, changes in the market and the requirement to innovate in line with our core business have made targeted direction necessary,” stated Rendani Ramovha, CEO of SuperSport.
We at Siwelele F.C. are honored to have been tasked with carrying on the PSL’s illustrious winning heritage. If we receive the final vote of approval from the PSL Executive Committee, we hope to expand on the fantastic 30-year basis that SuperSport and the MultiChoice Group created,” Siwelele F.C. chairman Calvin Le John stated.
