Angelique Kidjo joins the Hollywood Walk of Fame as the first Black African artist

Black African artist Angelique Kidjo is the first to be inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Being the first Black African musician to be inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame is a historic milestone in the brilliant career of Beninese music icon Angelique Kidjo.

An important milestone for African representation in Hollywood, the induction ceremony is evidence of her lasting influence on music and culture.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce selected her one of 35 entertainers who will be inducted into the 2026 Class of the Walk of Fame.

The foundation of Kidjo’s ascent to this level of fame is a four-decade career marked by creative innovation and a strong dedication to social advocacy.

Angelique Kidjo was born in 1960 in Ouidah, Benin, and started performing at a young age, influenced by her mother, a theater director and dancer, and father, a musician. She developed her distinct sound early on thanks to her exposure to a variety of musical genres, such as American rhythm and blues, Afropop, jazz, and Beninese traditional music. Following her first rise to fame in the 1980s, she finally relocated to Paris, France, to pursue her profession and further her education in music, where she also secured her first recording contract.

Her unique fusion of jazz, funk, pop, and West African rhythms immediately won her praise from all over the world. She frequently performed in Fon, Yoruba, French, and English. She gained international notoriety with albums like “Logozo” (1991), “Ayé” (1994), and “Fifa” (1996), which established her reputation for captivating live performances and socially sensitive lyrics.

Throughout her career, Kidjo has continuously advocated for women’s and children’s education, human rights, and sustainable development in Africa. She was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in recognition of her dedication to these causes, which further enhanced her humanitarian work.

Angelique Kidjo has a vast and well-reviewed repertoire that includes duets with a wide range of international artists, such as Carlos Santana, Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, and Philip Glass. Being able to work with people from other cultures and genres has solidified her reputation as a truly international artist.

In recognition of her continuous production of excellent, influential music, Kidjo has won multiple Grammy Awards and received other honors throughout her career, including four Best World Music Album Grammy Awards. Her 2019 CD “Celia” paid homage to salsa diva Celia Cruz and demonstrated her tremendous admiration for musical tradition and diversity.
