The jury in Diddy’s sex trafficking trial returns a “partial” verdict, but they remain divided over racketeering
Jurors in Diddy’s sex trafficking trial have indicated that the jury’s foreperson reports the group has reached verdicts on counts two, three, four, and five, but they remain deadlocked on the most serious charge.
Following approximately 12 hours of deliberation, jurors in the federal trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs have arrived at a verdict on four of the five charges, yet they remain unable to reach a consensus on the most serious charge: racketeering.
CNN reports that the jury reached unanimous decisions on charges concerning sex trafficking and the transportation of individuals for the purpose of engaging in prostitution. Nonetheless, there is still division regarding the racketeering charge, which claims that Combs ran a criminal enterprise while using his entertainment empire as a facade.
The outlet reports that both the prosecution and defense are urging the judge to encourage the jury to persist in their deliberations. Additionally, Diddy’s attorney is requesting that the judge personally address the jury to instruct them to continue deliberating instead of communicating through a note.
Diddy, 55, is facing five charges: one count of racketeering conspiracy and two counts each of sex trafficking and transportation for the purpose of engaging in prostitution, as previously reported. If convicted of the most severe charges, he may be sentenced to life imprisonment.
The accusations arose from claims that the music mogul leveraged his influence and resources to pressure women, including former girlfriend Casandra “Cassie” Ventura and a woman testifying under the pseudonym “Jane”, into engaging in non-consensual sexual acts. These incidents reportedly occurred during planned gatherings referred to as “Freak Offs” and “Hotel Nights,” which included male sex workers and various other participants.
The trial commenced in May and extended for almost a month, during which prosecutors showcased testimony from 34 witnesses. One of the most remarkable was Cassie, who provided testimony during the later stages of her pregnancy. Her extended testimony featured allegations of physical abuse and vivid descriptions of the so-called “Freak Offs.”
The defense presented no witnesses, yet implored jurors to find the music mogul not guilty.
As reported by Variety, Diddy’s attorney Marc Agnifilo addressed the jury, stating, “It takes a lot of courage to acquit,” and highlighted the challenges jurors face when considering a decision against federal prosecutors.
“You all represent the United States of America.” Embrace your boldness; harness the courage required to express your truth. I urge you to gather that strength and take the necessary actions to do what is right.
The court is currently anticipating the next steps regarding the unresolved racketeering count, and the partial verdict signifies a pivotal moment in one of the most prominent celebrity trials in recent history.
