Minkah Fitzpatrick returned to Miami, Jalen Ramsey was sent to the Steelers

Jalen Ramsey, an All-Pro cornerback, was acquired by the Pittsburgh Steelers from the Miami Dolphins on Monday.

After confirming the news on X, Ramsey wrote: “Break my own news! #HereWeGo @steelers.”

According to ESPN, the Steelers will also acquire tight end Jonnu Smith. According to ESPN, the blockbuster transaction will be completed by Pittsburgh sending All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to Miami along with an undisclosed late-round draft pick.

Of Ramsey’s 2025 salary, Miami paid $7 million, but the Steelers are responsible for the remaining $26.6 million in guaranteed pay under Ramsey’s contract. There were no extra years or guarantees included in the contract, according to NFL Network, but it does feature a $1.5 million rise in 2025, according to several reports.

Ramsey, 30, was worried about the assurances that were still part of his current contract. He skipped Miami’s required minicamp earlier this month as the organization tried to find a trade partner. The most probable destinations were thought to be the Los Angeles Rams and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Although Ramsey didn’t ask for a trade, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier stated before the 2025 NFL Draft that after multiple discussions on his contract, they both agreed that a possible move made sense.
In September 2024, Ramsey agreed to a three-year contract deal. He started all 17 Miami games and finished the previous season with two interceptions, 11 passes defensed, and 60 tackles.

Ramsey was traded to Miami in March 2023 for tight end Hunter Long and a third-round pick from the Rams. Despite missing the first seven games of the season due to a knee injury, Ramsey was selected to the Pro Bowl for the seventh consecutive year.

Ramsey has played in 135 games (134 starts) with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2016–19), Rams (2019–22), and Dolphins, recording 24 interceptions, 108 passes defensed, and 534 tackles. In the 2016 draft, the Jaguars selected him with the fifth overall pick.

Ramsey joins the Steelers’ loaded secondary, which also includes Darius Slay Jr., an offseason addition, and incumbent starter Joey Porter Jr.

Fitzpatrick, a 28-year-old first-round pick (11th overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft, began his career in Miami and has since gone on to win five Pro Bowls and three All-Pro selections.

Last season, Fitzpatrick made 17 starts and recorded 96 tackles and one interception. With the Dolphins (2018–19) and Steelers, he has played in 106 games (101 starts) and recorded 20 picks, 54 passes defensed, and 608 tackles. In September 2019, he was dealt to Pittsburgh by Miami.

The Steelers offered him a four-year contract worth $73.6 million in June 2022.

After being chosen by the Tennessee Titans in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Smith, 29, played his first four seasons there before spending two seasons with the New England Patriots and one each with the Atlanta Falcons and Dolphins.

Last season, he caught 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in 17 games (six starts). He was chosen to play in his first Pro Bowl. He’s caught 307 passes for 3,307 yards and 28 touchdowns in 124 games (84 starts) in his career.
