Danish Prime Minister Says Denmark Is Willing To Give Greenland More Investment And Foreign Policy Autonomy
Denmark may give Greenland more authority over foreign policy and plans to invest more in the region, according to Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen.
Mette Frederiksen, the prime minister of Denmark, declared Tuesday that Denmark is willing to invest more in Greenland and give the Arctic island more control over its foreign policy matters.
During a joint press conference with her Faroese and Greenlandic counterparts on the Faroe Islands, Frederiksen emphasized Denmark’s dedication to bolstering Greenland’s development, emphasizing infrastructure and economic expansion.
“We are prepared to make greater investments in the growth of the Greenlandic society,” Frederiksen stated, adding that this involves enlarging vital infrastructure that serves both military and civilian functions.
She went on to say, “This could be ports and another kind of critical infrastructure that has a military and defense perspective but can also be used, for example, in relation to tourism or raw materials extraction.”
With increased geopolitical interest in the Arctic, the statement shows Denmark’s rising support for its autonomous territory. Although Greenland has its own government and governs its own affairs, it nevertheless depends on Denmark for defense, foreign policy, and financial problems.
The proposed change in foreign policy power reflects continuing discussions over Greenland’s future place in the Kingdom of Denmark and represents a major step toward more self-governance for the island.
