During his address at the G7 summit in Canada on Monday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the initiative, stating it was aimed at “building up a picture of who is in the region” should they need support.

“We are advising British nationals in Israel to register their presence today,” Starmer informed reporters.

The advisory comes in response to increased tensions in the region following Israel’s airstrikes on Iran on Friday, with accusations directed at Tehran regarding its progress toward developing a nuclear weapon. In retaliation, Iran launched missiles targeting significant Israeli cities, heightening concerns about a potential wider regional conflict. Iran has consistently asserted that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes.

During a distinct press briefing in London, a spokesperson for Starmer articulated the reasoning behind the registration initiative. “We urge British nationals in Israel to adhere to the guidance provided by local authorities regarding remaining near shelters,” they stated.

The British government announced the launch of a “register your presence” portal aimed at tracking nationals in the area and determining who may require assistance. “We encourage British nationals in Israel to finalize this as soon as it is accessible.”

The spokesperson highlighted that the UK is enhancing logistical support for citizens seeking to exit Israel by land, with arrangements established through neighboring Jordan and Egypt. Officials from the Foreign Office are currently positioned at the Jordanian border to aid in the evacuation efforts.

The action signifies increasing global apprehension regarding the escalating conflict, as Western leaders keep a vigilant eye on the situation and make preparations for potential humanitarian needs.
