The Trump Administration Is Considering Banning Visas in Nigeria and 35 Other Countries
The United States may ban travel to 36 nations, including Nigeria, if new standards are not reached within 60 days.
According to a Washington Post internal report, the US President Donald Trump administration is planning to block visas for Nigeria and up to 35 other nations, the most of which are in Africa.
Signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the letter presents a plan that would impose travel restrictions or complete entrance bans on countries that allegedly fail to meet new State Department standards. There is a 60-day window for these nations to present a preliminary plan of action, failing which they risk being put to the US travel ban list.
Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and little island states like Saint Lucia, Vanuatu, and Tonga are among the countries allegedly being reviewed.
A number of issues were noted by the Trump administration, the memo said, including the lack of “competent or cooperative central government authority to produce reliable identity documents” and cases of “widespread government fraud.”
Nigeria was not originally on the March proposal, which is expanded upon in the most recent list. According to how severely their visa requirements were enforced, 43 nations were divided into red, orange, and yellow groups in that previous suggestion.
According to reports, President Trump is thinking of a complete ban for nations in the “red” category, drastically restricting visa access for those in the “orange” category, and giving the “yellow” group—which now includes Nigeria—60 days to comply.
The move, according to officials, is a component of larger initiatives to strengthen border security in the United States and implement stricter immigration laws.
