The sole survivor describes the horror of the Air India crash
The sole survivor of the Air India disaster has revealed terrifying recollections of seeing others perish as he barely survived.
The lone survivor of the Air India airline accident, which claimed the lives of over 240 people, said on Friday that he was still having trouble understanding how he survived. He described horrifying scenes of passengers dying all around him as he managed to escape through a broken emergency exit.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner caught fire immediately after takeoff from Ahmedabad, but Viswashkumar Ramesh, who police said was sitting in 11A close to the emergency exit, was able to crawl out of the wreckage. The plane struck a medical college dorm, resulting in the deadliest aviation accident to strike India in ten years.
Social media footage showed 40-year-old Ramesh, a British national of Indian descent, walking along the street in a blood-stained T-shirt, his face pummeled and scarred. Since then, many Indian news channels have shown that footage.
“How I lived is beyond me. From his hospital bed, Ramesh told Indian state channel DD News, “I thought for a while that I was also going to die.” However, I tried to unbuckle myself from the seat and get out of there as soon as I could after realizing I was still alive when I opened my eyes. The flight hostess and others [died] right in front of me.
Ramesh had been traveling with his brother, Ajay, who was sitting in a separate row, according to his family.
He clarified that there was an opening to the outside since the side of the aircraft where he was sitting had collided with the earth. “When my door broke, I tried to escape through it because I could see that there was space outside the aircraft,” he stated. “No one could have gotten out of there because the building wall blocked the opposite side of the aircraft.”
Ramesh sustained burns and bruising, according to medical staff at Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital, and is still being monitored. Speaking to Reuters anonymously, one hospital official called his survival “amazing.”
It was very miraculous that he managed to escape without suffering any serious injuries. He understands it as well, and the trauma of it has also somewhat rattled him,” the official stated.
His story has been termed the “miracle of seat 11A” by the British media.
