Merz of Germany claims that Netanyahu informed him about Israel’s attack on Iran

Merz of Germany claims that Netanyahu told him about Israel’s attack on Iran, but he advises both parties to refrain from escalating the situation further.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Friday that he spoke with Israeli leadership over the phone earlier that morning and was notified of Israel’s military strike on Iran.

Merz urged both countries to prevent further escalation in an already unstable region while acknowledging Israel’s right to self-defense in an official statement.

Israel claimed to have struck military leaders, ballistic missile manufacturers, and nuclear facilities during its targeted strikes on Iranian targets on Friday. Israeli officials said the operation was intended to stop Iran from producing nuclear weapons.

Merz stated that Germany is closely collaborating with important international allies, such as the United States, Britain, and France, in reaction to the developing situation. “We call on both sides to refrain from steps that could lead to further escalation and destabilize the entire region,” Merz said.

To evaluate the situation, the German Chancellor also called a meeting of the security cabinet. In addition to taking the required safety measures for German nationals presently in Israel, Iran, and the larger Middle East, the cabinet decided to strengthen protection of Jewish and Israeli organizations in Germany.

Merz reaffirmed long-standing worries about Iran’s nuclear aspirations, pointing out that the country still doesn’t fulfill its commitments to reveal its nuclear enrichment efforts. Germany has continuously voiced concern over the nation’s sophisticated nuclear program, he continued.
