Portugal’s passionate Ronaldo celebrates their Nations League victory
Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Portugal, broke down in tears as his team won their second Nations League trophy on Sunday, stating that winning trophies with his nation is more important than any club honors.
After a 2-2 draw with Spain, Ronaldo scored his 138th goal for his country in the second half, forcing penalties to decide the outcome. The 40-year-old forward, who had been substituted, watched from the sidelines as Portugal won all five of their spot kicks.
The victory, which brought the five-time Champions League champion to tears, was Ronaldo’s third on the international front, after his medals from the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 Nations League.
“What a joy,” Ronaldo remarked on Sport TV. “First and foremost for our families, who deserved a title of this caliber, and our generation. My brother, my wife, my friends, and my kids came here.
“Portugal victories are always unique. I’ve won a lot of titles with clubs, but nothing compares to representing Portugal. Tears are the cause. There’s a lot of joy and obligation fulfilled.
Talking about Portugal usually evokes a certain emotion. Being this generation’s captain makes you proud. For a national team, winning a championship is always the apex.
The future of Ronaldo is still up in the air. Although teams participating in the 32-team competition have been vying for his services, he stated last week that he has no intention of playing in the Club World Cup in the United States, which begins later this month.
Fernando Hierro, the sports director of his squad, stated last month that they were negotiating a contract extension with Ronaldo, but that they were up against competition from teams keen to sign the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. The Al-Nassr forward claimed to have received multiple offers from other teams to play in the United States.
He played in the final with an injury, but for now, he is only thinking about celebrating his most recent victory.
Adding, “It’s beautiful,” For the sake of our country. Despite our modest size, we have lofty goals.
“We have a short future. Let’s have a good night’s sleep now. That was the most severe injury I could have had. I pushed because it’s necessary for the national team.
