Trump and Xi are expected to talk soon about the trade dispute over minerals, according to advisors
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Sunday that U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet shortly to resolve trade difficulties, including a disagreement over vital minerals.
On Friday, Trump charged China with breaking a deal with the United States to reciprocally remove trade barriers and tariffs on vital minerals.
“China is preventing the release of goods that are necessary for the industrial supply networks in Europe and India. And a trustworthy partner doesn’t do that,” Bessent stated during an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
“I have no doubt that this will be resolved when President Trump and Party Chairman Xi speak. However, the fact that they are not releasing some of the products that they pledged to deliver during our agreement may be a deliberate or unintentional malfunction in the Chinese system. After the president talks with the party chairman, we’ll find out.
On Friday, Trump declared that he was certain he would talk to Xi. China said in April that there had been no recent communication between the two presidents.
According to Bessent, when asked if Trump had a meeting with Xi planned, “I believe we’ll see something very soon.”
According to White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett, there is no firm date for the discussion, but there have been talks that the presidents will discuss the Geneva accord on certain tariff disputes last month.
“We anticipate that President Trump and President Xi will have a great discussion regarding the trade negotiations this week. We expect that,” Hassett stated.
