World Cup: Al Ahly hires Rivero as new manager

Al-Ahly revealed on Thursday that they have hired Jose Riveiro, a Spanish coach, as their new manager. This is before the Club World Cup in the United States.

Riveiro will play Inter Miami, which is led by Lionel Messi, in the new Club World Cup opener on June 14 to begin his time with Al-Ahly.

The club announced on X that Jose Riveiro had been hired as coach for two years. This was one day after winning the Egyptian league title.

Riveiro, 49, who was in charge of the Orlando Pirates in South Africa the previous year, will replace Marcel Koller.

Koller quit Al-Ahly after the team lost to Mamelodi Sundowns last month in the semifinals of the CAF Champions League.

Emad El-Nahhas will stay on as an assistant manager. He was the team’s interim manager and led them to a record-tying 45th league title.

Porto of Portugal and Palmeiras of Brazil are also in Group A of the Club World Cup. All three teams will play each other.
