UFC Icon After a strange incident was captured on camera, BJ Penn was arrested
MMA legend BJ Penn was handcuffed over the weekend after a strange and tense encounter with police. The whole thing was caught on tape.
Hawaii Police say that the former UFC champion was taken in Hilo late Sunday night and booked on a charge of “abuse of a family or household member: offensive physical contact.”
Police say they arrested BJ Penn around 9:40 PM and then freed him on $2,000 bail just before 2 AM Monday morning.
BJ Penn shared strange video of his arrest.
Although the exact details of the arrest are still unknown, Penn seemed to talk about it in a mysterious Instagram post late Monday, where he posted video footage of several police officers trying to arrest him in his bedroom.
The text talked about “impostor theft,” which is a term used in Hawaii to describe people who pretend to be someone else, even police officers, to commit fraud or other crimes.
One of the cops stands over Penn with a flashlight while he lies on a bed in the video. Things get worse quickly, and the cops tell him he’s going to jail for harassment.
Penn keeps asking them why they are there, and at one point he asks, “Can we call an officer I know?” He doesn’t want to leave and looks confused and angry, but he is eventually led out of the house in handcuffs.
A viral video of an arrest is drawing fire on a cameraman.
People who saw the video of BJ Penn’s arrest on social media weren’t just upset about the UFC legend’s behavior; many of them also blamed the person who was filming.
In the video that has gone viral, a guy can be heard filming Penn as he lies in bed, clearly upset, as police try to arrest him. But people who commented online don’t seem to care about Penn’s health. Instead, they say the cameraman may have made things worse.
Many people agreed with the person who wrote this: “Whoever is recording this sounds like the one who’s manipulating BJ and making him believe things that aren’t happening and is making his already bad mental state even worse.”
Someone else didn’t hold back and said, “Whoever is recording is making BJ Penn’s mental health worse.” Someone else asked the videographer, “What I wanna know is who is his supposedly friend filming and why is he visiting here from the mainland with no money.” This wasn’t the end of the intense scrutiny.
In connection with the arrest, Penn is set to appear in court on Tuesday. It’s not clear if more charges will be brought or if more video will be made public.
The mother of BJ Penn got a restraining order.
As BJ Penn’s legal problems get worse, new court papers show that there is a disturbing family dynamic going on behind the scenes.
MMA Fighting got a copy of documents that say Penn’s mother, Lorraine Shin, was given a temporary protection order this week after a number of disturbing claims. The order was given after Penn was arrested twice in Hawaii for allegedly abusing a family member or member of the home. Judge Jeffrey Ng agreed to it. He has to stay at least 100 feet away from his mother and not talk to her at all until at least June 10 when he has to go to court.
Shin said in her signed statement that her son has used “extreme psychological abuse” against her and that she thinks he may have Capgras syndrome, a rare mental illness. People with this disorder think that identical imposters have taken the place of close relations.
That’s what Shin wrote: “I think my son [BJ Penn] has Capgras delusional syndrome.” It seems like he thinks I’m a fake who killed his family to take their property.
Penn’s legal and family problems have taken a new turn because of a rare mental disorder.
