McTominay’s Goal Secures Serie A Title for Napoli Under Inter Milan’s Pressure
McTominay’s important goal wins Napoli’s Serie A victory, ending Inter Milan’s title hopes despite strong pressure from them.
After a thrilling 2-0 win over Cagliari at the joyful Armando Maradona Stadium, Napoli won Serie A for the fourth time and the second time in three years.
Naples went crazy with joy after their win, even though title foes Inter Milan put pressure on them and easily beat Como 2-0. Antonio Conte’s team kept their cool.
As soon as the game started, Napoli had the ball 72% of the time and had sent in 17 crosses by halftime. In the 42nd minute, Matteo Politano sent in a perfect cross that Scott McTominay met with an acrobatic bicycle kick. It was his most famous goal to date.
Napoli was clearly tense early in the second half because Inter was ahead of Como in the title race and they had to win. But Romelu Lukaku showed that he was up to the task by dribbling past two players to grab Amir Rrahmani’s long ball and then putting a calm finish past Simone Scuffet. The Belgian got a yellow card for celebrating too much, and it could be heard in the stands and all over the city.
Antonio Conte was clearly present in the game, even though he was suspended and watched from the stands. His team only let Cagliari take one shot, and none of them hit the goal. Napoli, on the other hand, had 22 shots on goal.
Inter Milan, on the other hand, won their last game, but it wasn’t enough. Before halftime, Stefan de Vrij scored the first goal with a strong header from Hakan Calhanoglu’s corner kick. Soon after, Joaquin Correa scored the second goal with a clean finish after Mehdi Taremi’s smart pass.
Como, led by Cesc Fabregas, stayed strong even though Pepe Reina was sent off in his farewell game, reducing them to ten men. Both Gabriel Strefezza and Patrick Cutrone missed important chances, but Inter’s careful play in the second half—with an eye on the Champions League final—meant they lost the title race in the end.
Conte is now one of only a few managers to have won Serie A with three different teams: Juventus, Inter, and Napoli. This night was a historic one for the city of Naples and for his reputation.
