Wydad and Mokwena part ways
Rulani Mokwena’s resignation has been confirmed by Wydad Casablanca following a mutually agreed-upon contract termination.
Following his abrupt departure from Mamelodi Sundowns, whom he had led to a seventh consecutive Betway Premiership title the month before, the South African was named head coach in July 2024.
However, Mokwena won just 11 of his 27 games as manager before the Moroccan powerhouses put him on “special leave” because he was unable to build a meaningful title threat in the Botola Pro.
The Red Castle finished sixth after winning their final three games under interim coach Amine Benhachem, and the 38-year-old closed his tenure with a run of six straight draws despite going undefeated in his previous 11 games.
“Rulani Mokwena and Wydad Athletic Club have mutually decided to end their contract with immediate effect,” the club announced in a statement on Tuesday night.
“Coach Mokwena and his technical team deserve the club’s sincere gratitude for their sacrifices, dedication, and hard work throughout a difficult season. Their commitment and professionalism have made a lasting impression on the club.
“As I say goodbye, I carry unforgettable memories from Wydad, a club that will forever remain in my heart,” Mokwena continued, adding that he still had two years left on his contract at the Mohammed V Stadium.
“I wish the team, employees, and supporters the best of luck in the upcoming season and the Club World Cup. I hope you keep inspiring us all and creating history. “Dima Wydad!”
