Africa must now pave its own route to security.
In view of the numerous security issues that still plague various regions, it is imperative that the continent take a united stance when the International Security Conference on Africa (ISCA) meets in Kigali from May 19 to 20, 2025.
This first-of-its-kind event brings together security professionals, politicians, and civil society players to tackle urgent issues like cyber threats, political instability, transnational crimes, and terrorism.
ISCA is important not only because of its goals but also because it has the ability to spark a paradigm change. Africa’s security architecture has been shaped by outside forces for far too long, frequently ignoring local answers.
This type of architecture has typically made security issues worse or more complex, primarily because its proponents lack context or, in the worst cases, prioritize their own interests over that of Africans.
Thus, ISCA will provide a forum to elevate African perspectives and promote indigenous approaches suited to the continent’s distinct circumstances.
Nonetheless, dedication beyond conferences and the resolutions they produce is essential to the success of such projects. African nations must show political will in order to invest in organizations like ISCA and put decisions into action.
It is crucial to give ISCA the necessary tools and power to turn discussions into action and promote long-term peace for this vast continent that has endured so much suffering.
Furthermore, the fact that Africa’s security issues cannot be outsourced must be acknowledged. Although international collaborations are beneficial, African states bear the main burden of maintaining peace and stability. Accepting this duty will enable the continent to create robust systems that are consistent with its interests and ideals.
Let this be the start of a reinvigorated dedication to African-led security solutions as ISCA gets underway in Kigali. Africa can steer toward a future that is more secure and independent by uniting, being determined, and making strategic investments.
