The president of South Africa will meet with Trump in the US next week

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on May 21 during a working visit to the United States next week, according to a statement released late Wednesday by Ramaphosa’s office.

“President Ramaphosa will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington DC to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of interest,” said the president of South Africa.

“The president’s visit to the US provides a platform to reset the strategic relationship between the two countries,” said the statement.

Since Trump took office again in January, the U.S.-South Africa relationship has deteriorated dramatically.

Citing displeasure of South Africa’s land reform efforts and its genocide case against Washington’s ally Israel in the International Court of Justice, Trump has halted all U.S. financial aid to the country.

The Trump administration granted refugee status to 49 white South Africans last week after determining they had experienced racial persecution.

According to South Africa, there is no proof that white people are being persecuted there, and Ramaphosa has stated that the US government “has got the wrong end of the stick.”

After China, the United States ranks as South Africa’s second-largest bilateral commercial partner.
