Djokovic and coach Murray part ways before the French Open
Novak Djokovic, who has won 24 Grand Slams, will no longer be coached by Andy Murray. The British player’s team announced on Tuesday that the pair’s high-profile bond was ending after six months and no wins.
Before this year’s Australian Open, Djokovic hired Murray, who was also a former world number one. The Serb said at the Qatar Open in February that he would keep working with Murray indefinitely.
But they are no longer working together. Djokovic will be playing in the Geneva Open next week to try to get back on track after a slow start to the clay season. On May 25, he will start his quest for a fourth French Open title.
“Thanks to Novak for the unbelievable opportunity to work together and thanks to his team for all their hard work over the past six months,” Murray wrote in a statement.
“I wish Novak all the best for the rest of the season.”
Djokovic said he was thankful for Murray’s hard work and support during their short time together. Djokovic won 25 of their 36 wins.
“It was great getting to know each other better,” Djokovic said.
In January, Djokovic made it to the semi-finals of the Australian Open before getting hurt and ending his season. He made it to the final of the Miami Open in March, but Jakub Mensik beat him and stopped him from becoming the 100th player to win a tour-level prize.
The Serb, who turns 38 three days before the second Grand Slam of the year starts, has been awful since his loss in Miami. He lost his first matches at the Masters in Monte Carlo and Madrid last month.
He was supposed to start his clay court season in Rome before going back to Paris, where he won gold at the Olympics last year, but he skipped the Italian Open that was still going on without giving a reason.
Djokovic took a wildcard into the Geneva Open from May 18th to 24th.
