An ex-Ryanair pilot was charged with possessing more than €10 million worth of cannabis
Brendan O’Meara, a former pilot, has been placed under remand for having more than €10 million worth of herbal cannabis that he intended to sell or distribute.
After being accused with the seizure of almost €10 million (£8.5 million) worth of herbal cannabis, a former Ryanair pilot was placed under detention in custody in the Republic of Ireland.
On Saturday, Brendan O’Meara, 62, who lives at An Tulach, Summer Hill, Meelick, County Clare, appeared before a special session of the Ennis district court. After a significant narcotics bust at his home on May 7, he is charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession for sale or supply.
O’Meara’s lawyer filed a bail application, but it was denied when gardaí vehemently protested, claiming he was a “high flight risk.” As investigations go, more serious charges are expected to be brought against the accused, according to a garda officer who informed Judge Marie Keane that the accused faced a serious risk of absconding.
Concerned about Mr. O’Meara’s ability to escape and the expected increase of charges, Judge Keane granted the prosecution’s request and denied bail.
O’Meara was placed under remand in detention and is expected to make a follow-up appearance in court via video connection on May 14.
