India and Pakistan Reach an Immediate Ceasefire Following US-Mediated Discussions
India and Pakistan have reached an agreement for a US-mediated ceasefire following several days of cross-border attacks and escalating regional tensions.
India and Pakistan have reached an agreement for a complete and immediate ceasefire, providing a temporary pause to the rising military tensions that have affected South Asia in recent days.
The ceasefire officially commenced at 17:00 local time (12:30 BST), after what former US President Donald Trump referred to as “a long night of talks” facilitated by the United States.
The agreement follows a week marked by increased hostilities, featuring missile and drone exchanges as well as cross-border shelling, subsequent to Indian airstrikes on targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The strikes were a reaction to a lethal militant assault in Pahalgam last month that resulted in the deaths of several Indian tourists, an incident that India has attributed to militants based in Pakistan.
Islamabad has refuted any claims of involvement.
India, in affirming its commitment to the ceasefire terms, stated that its army is “vigilant” and “prepared to launch what is necessary for the defence of our nation,” indicating that trust between the two countries remains delicate.
In a statement, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister remarked, “Pakistan has consistently pursued peace and security in the region.” We embrace this ceasefire and anticipate it will result in de-escalation.
The two nations have a longstanding rivalry concerning the contested area of Kashmir, which has experienced years of insurgency and sporadic conflict. Both sides assert full ownership of the territory while governing separate areas, and the region has often served as a catalyst for military conflicts.
Former President Trump, instrumental in brokering the ceasefire, expressed his praise for both governments on social media. “After an extensive night of discussions, peace has triumphed, at least for the moment.” He expressed his pride in having contributed to this achievement.
International observers are cautiously welcoming the ceasefire, viewing it as a crucial step away from the potential for broader conflict. However, they emphasize that achieving lasting peace will necessitate ongoing diplomatic efforts, mutual restraint, and reliable accountability mechanisms.
