Gabrielle Union Shares That ‘Surrogacy Felt Like A Cuckold’ After Welcoming Daughter Kaavia: ‘I’ll Never Find Peace With It’

Six years have passed since Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade welcomed their daughter Kaavia, but the actress still feels uneasy about their surrogacy journey.

Union recently talked candidly with Marie Claire for their first-ever Motherhood issue on her thoughts when she had to use surrogacy to conceive her daughter, Kaavia.

But it felt like failure to me. She described her experience as a surrogate as “my body failing.” It simply seemed like a huge disgrace in front of the people. I felt like a cuckold watching someone else perform a task that I am incapable of performing.

The Being Mary Jane actress went on: “It’s mind f**k for folks who have been on my journey and who feel the same way to be there for someone else succeeding where I failed. Since everyone wants their path to be the “right” one, I find myself tempted to pass judgment and make accusations when it has never been their reality.

Despite her gratitude to her surrogate, the celebrity says she will “never” be at peace with her inability to conceive.

Never, ever will I be at peace with it. Union acknowledges, “And that’s not a what-anybody-has-to-say thing; that’s just—my yearning has never dissipated.” “Although I was prepared for my surprise, the fact that my child is here has made me more mindful of my prayers that weren’t answered as I had hoped.”

“However, I’m really appreciative of our gestational caregiver,” she added. I might never be able to fully reconcile my coulda, woulda, and shouldas because it’s such a personal experience.

The actress told People that she and her husband were “scared” about the NBA star’s 17-year-old daughter, Zaya, heading off to college in the fall during Monday’s Met Gala. Since they are attending the same school for the first time this year, Kaavia has been fortunate to spend some additional time with her sister until that time arrives.

“It’s amusing because [Kaavia] is in kindergarten and Zaya is a senior at the same school,” Union said. Zaya thus joins Kaav for lunch and spends time with him. And it’s truly unique that they attend the same school, if only for a year.
