The UN Mission panel in Libya has finalized a set of options to address the problems with the elections

According to the U.N. Mission in Libya, its advisory committee concluded its consultations on Friday and came up with a list of solutions to deal with controversial issues in the country’s current election system. The Mission will then begin discussions with Libyan stakeholders based on these possibilities.

The Advisory Committee was established by UNSMIL in February to suggest solutions for the problems impeding the much-anticipated national elections.

“The Committee’s options will be a useful contribution towards securing political agreement for the holding of national elections and unifying state institutions, which are important steps to ending division and the cycle of transition,” said the Mission.

Since an election that was supposed to take place in December 2021 fell through because to disagreements over the eligibility of the leading candidates, a political process to end more than ten years of conflict in Libya has been put on hold.

Libya, which was divided in 2014 between eastern and western factions with competing administrations ruling in each, has not seen much peace since an uprising supported by NATO in 2011.

The House of Representatives in Benghazi no longer acknowledges the authority of the Government of National Unity, which was established in 2021 under Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah and based in Tripoli with support from the United Nations.

Many Libyans are skeptical that their political leaders are negotiating in good faith because they think they are reluctant to hold elections that could deprive them of their jobs.
