Nairobi, the country’s capital, reports that a Kenyan politician was shot dead

Gunmen on motorcycles killed a Kenyan politician in the capital city of Nairobi on Wednesday evening, according to local station Citizen TV.

Other Kenyan media outlets, such as the newspapers The Nation and The Standard, also covered the story.

Charles Were, a member from the western Kenyan seat of Kasipul, was shot dead at approximately 7:30 p.m. local time “by two gunmen who were trailing him with a motorbike,” according to Citizen TV.

According to Citizen TV, Were’s driver escaped the gunshot, and one of the gunmen off the motorcycle and shot him at close range. The MP was brought to a hospital for treatment, where he was declared dead.

In the most recent election in 2022, Were was a member of the opposition ODM party, which was led by seasoned politician Raila Odinga but lost to William Ruto.

Odinga has since reached a deal with Ruto to resolve problems facing Kenya after rejecting the election results on the grounds of anomalies.
