Trump Continues to Demand Canada Become the 51st State in the Union as Voters Cast Their Ballots
Ahead of Canada’s snap election, President Trump has sparked controversy by repeating his desire for Canada to become the 51st US state.
President Donald Trump of the United States has sparked controversy once again by calling for Canada to become the 51st state to enter the union as it prepares to hold a snap election.
Just hours before the election, Trump made the statement on social media, escalating tensions between the two nations.
As voters choose between giving Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party more authority and extending the Liberal Party’s ten-year rule under Prime Minister Mark Carney, his comments immediately prompted scathing reactions from Canadian political figures.
The Conservative leader and leading candidate for the premiership, Poilievre, quickly chastised Trump, telling him to “stay out of our election” in a public statement.
Carney reiterated the idea, saying that Canadians should be “united and strong” in the face of what he called a “crisis in the United States.” Carney entered office barely six weeks ago after Justin Trudeau resigned.
