$300K is stolen by a crowd in the Chicago suburbs after bags fall off an armored truck

Police in Oak Park are looking into dozens of people who stole money from an open Brinks truck.

An armored truck unintentionally dumped hundreds of thousands of dollars onto a busy roadway last week, sparking a real-life cash grab in the Chicago suburbs. Dozens of people quickly fled with the booty.

A Brinks Home Security vehicle was traveling south on South Austin Boulevard at approximately 5:07 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, when the crazy incident occurred, according to Oak Park Police. The back door of the truck opened for some reason, dropping three bags full of cash into the road.

A Brinks employee came back to retrieve the money, but it was too late. The number of persons who leaped into action ranged from fifty to one hundred, snatching cash by the handful and escaping in cars and on foot. Roughly $300,000 is the expected total loss.

No arrests have been made, according to officials. The event is currently being investigated by Oak Park authorities, who are also looking at local camera footage.

Brinks has not yet issued an explanation for the door’s malfunction. Anyone with information or who might have picked up the money is being urged to come forward by the police.
