Missouri State University Safety Todric McGee passes away due to a “possible accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound”
After a shooting mishap, the collegiate football community is in grief for the loss of another talented athlete.
Todric McGee, a 21-year-old safety for Missouri State University, died early Saturday morning. According to the university, he died in a hospital after suffering injuries at home. Responding officers discovered McGee on Friday morning during a wellness check with a “possible accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to police, who spoke to The Springfield News-Leader.
“We would like to offer our condolences to Todric’s family, friends, and teammates on behalf of the university and our entire department,” stated Patrick Ransdell, Missouri State Director of Athletics. “Our football program has been rocked by this tragedy, and we want them to know that we are here to support them in any way we can during this very trying time.”
Head coach Ryan Beard also stated, “Our football family is in shock and mourning at the loss of Todric.” “As we start the grieving process, we kindly ask that everyone respect the privacy of his family and our MoState football team. Please join us in praying for Todric and his loved ones.
McGee, who attended Wichita Northwest High School and was a native of Wichita, Kansas, was getting ready for his sixth season with the Bears. Before his most recent season was cut short by injury, he earned all-conference accolades and started as the team’s safety in 2023 and 2024.
His premature death comes after Kyren Lacy, a former standout student at LSU, committed himself on April 12th, months after being charged in relation to a fatal hit-and-run accident. How authorities came to the conclusion that the McGee shooting was an accident is unknown.
The probe is still ongoing, though, and more information is probably going to surface in the days ahead.
