Rubio claims the US will determine in a matter of days whether ending the war in Ukraine is “doable”
The United States will decide in the next several days whether it is possible to halt the war in Ukraine, according to Marco Rubio.
After speaking with French President Emmanuel Macron, Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated Friday that if no significant progress is achieved in the next few days, the United States may give up on ending the war in Ukraine.
Mr. Rubio told reporters that the Trump administration would make a decision “in a matter of days whether or not this is doable in the next few weeks” if ending the war in Ukraine was not feasible.
It was unclear from Mr. Rubio’s comments if he meant to halt Washington’s efforts to secure a short-term cease-fire or if he meant a more comprehensive US pullout from Ukraine. In addition to calling on European leaders to urge Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to seek compromises, his remarks seemed to be intended to increase pressure on all sides to end the fighting.
European governments have more direct influence over Mr. Zelensky, even though the US continues to be Russia’s primary negotiator. Following his earlier meeting with European leaders, President Trump declared on Thursday that he was “not a big fan” of the Ukrainian leader.
Mr. Rubio stated that President Trump has consistently worked to terminate this war during his 87 days at the top of this country. At this point, we must make a decision and ascertain whether this is really feasible.
The goal of Thursday’s high-level talks with Ukrainian, European, and American officials was to reconcile the conflict’s disparate viewpoints in Washington and Europe. They were characterized as the first of their type. While acknowledging his mounting irritation, Mr. Rubio described the discussions as helpful.
“This war is not ours. “We didn’t initiate it,” he stated. “It’s not our war, but the United States wants it to stop. We have been supporting Ukraine for the last three years.”
Mr. Rubio has spearheaded U.S. diplomatic efforts, as has President Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff, who has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin multiple times to try to establish what he called a “friendship, a relationship” with the Kremlin.
Even after those discussions, Mr. Putin has persisted in imposing strict requirements, such as a 30-day cease-fire, while Russia continues its attack on Ukraine.
Next week, participants in the Paris discussions are scheduled to meet again in London. Mr. Rubio stated his intention to attend and hoped that European leaders would continue to be dedicated to the peace process.
So far, Kyiv has firmly rejected Russia’s demands, which include Ukraine giving up its NATO ambitions and ceding occupied regions.
Speaking to reporters at the Le Bourget airport prior to his departure, Mr. Rubio stated, “I believe the UK, France, and Germany can help us move the ball on this and then get this closer to a resolution.” “I felt their suggestions were really beneficial and constructive.”
