Four Lives Lost, One in Critical Condition Following Cable Car Accident on Mount Faito, Italy

A tragic incident has occurred at a tourist destination in Italy, where a cable car accident has resulted in four fatalities and one injury.

Emergency services confirmed on Thursday that at least four individuals have lost their lives, and another has sustained critical injuries following the plunge of a cable car cabin to the ground on Mount Faito, located near Naples in southern Italy.

Local authorities report that the accident happened when a traction cable allegedly snapped, causing the cabin to plummet down a valley at high altitude.

The survivor, critically injured, was airlifted to the hospital, as rescue efforts have been complicated by poor visibility, heavy rain, and gusty winds.

Vincenzo De Luca, the president of the Campania region, has confirmed that all the victims were tourists.

Earlier, more than a dozen other passengers were rescued from a second cabin that had stalled lower down the mountain. Stunning visuals aired on Italian media depicted individuals being hoisted to safety by emergency teams.

The Mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, the location of the cable car line, confirmed that the likely cause was a ruptured traction cable.

“The emergency brake downstream functioned, but it was evident that the one in the cabin, nearing the summit of the hill, did not,” he remarked.

He asserted that the system had been subject to routine safety inspections, and inquiries are currently in progress.

The public transport operator EAV, responsible for the cable car service, conveyed their condolences in a social media post, referring to the incident as “a tragedy.”

The cable car line attracts many visitors with its stunning panoramic views of the Bay of Naples, bringing thousands of tourists to the region annually.
