The head of NATO reiterates his “unwavering” support for Ukraine following a deadly Russian missile strike
In his visit to Odesa in the wake of fatal Russian missile strikes, NATO Chief Executive John Rutte promised “unwavering” support for Ukraine.
In the wake of a deadly Russian missile attack in the north, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa on Tuesday, reiterating the alliance’s “unwavering” support for Ukraine.
Russian ballistic missile strikes on Sumy on Sunday, which Ukrainian officials say killed 35 people and injured over 100, preceded the visit. The trip coincided with the United States, NATO’s dominant power, attempting to mediate a truce between Russia and Ukraine, an endeavor that has been criticized by both sides of the conflict.
Rutte reiterated NATO’s commitment to Ukraine during a joint press conference with Zelenskiy. “NATO supports Ukraine,” he declared. “I am aware that in recent months, some people have questioned our support. But let there be no question: We will always be there for you.
“We all support President Trump’s push for peace,” he said, acknowledging the current US-led negotiations with Russia and Ukraine, adding that they are “not easy—especially after such horrific violence.”
The remarks followed US President Donald Trump’s contentious accusation that Zelenskiy initiated the conflict, even though Russia had launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022. Pushing back, Rutte declared, “Russia is the aggressor.” This war was initiated by Russia. Without a question.
Zelenskiy reaffirmed Ukraine’s pressing need for improved air defense during the visit. He emphasized the need of obtaining Patriot missile systems, which are mostly manufactured by US defense companies Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, and stated, “Everyone sees how urgent Ukraine’s need for air defense systems and missiles is.”
“We’re prepared to buy Patriots; we’re not just requesting them. Both the missiles and the systems are available. Political decisions alone will determine whether Ukraine is shielded from Russian missile strikes, Zelenskiy continued.
Additionally, the two leaders went to a nearby hospital to see how injured Ukrainian soldiers were being treated. After visiting Ukraine, Rutte went to neighboring Moldova to continue his talks with President Maia Sandu about regional security.
