Orta: It was a mistake to wager on Iheanacho

Victor Orta, Sevilla’s sporting director, stated that signing Kelechi Iheanacho was a mistake, therefore it looks like there is no turning back for the striker.

In July 2024, the Nigerian international ended his seven-year tenure at newly promoted Leicester and signed a free transfer to Los Palanganas.

Iheanacho hasn’t made an impression at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, though, making just nine appearances in La Liga, six of which were as a starter, and hasn’t yet contributed to the Andalusian team.

After being sent on a six-month loan to Middlesbrough in February, the 28-year-old’s performance in England hasn’t improved; in 11 Championship games, he has only scored one goal.

Orta shared his thoughts on the off-season signing of Iheanacho during the Monday unveiling of Joaquin Caparros, who was brought in to replace the fired Garcia Pimienta.

Because there was a starter like Youssef [En-Nesyri] and a striker who came on later, like Isaac [Romero], Orta explained, “I want to clarify that the first two strikers were brought in as complements, to be practically the third striker.”

“However, it is evident that placing a wager on Kelechi this season was a mistake, and we will now examine the reasons behind our decision.”
