Chauncey Billups, the coach of the Blazers, consents to a multi-year agreement

The Portland Trail Blazers announced Sunday morning that head coach Chauncey Billups had agreed to a multi-year contract extension.

Billups, who is nearing the end of the last guaranteed year of his contract, did not reveal the financial parameters of the agreement.

The Trail Blazers and general manager Joe Cronin reached a multi-year agreement six days before to the transfer.

“I want to thank (Trail Blazers chair) Jody Allen, (vice chair) Bert Kolde and Joe Cronin for their belief in me as we all progress on this journey of creating a sustained winner for years to come,” Billups stated. “With a competitive, hard-nosed, defensive mindset, we are constructing this team the proper way. I’m excited to keep providing Rip City supporters with an on-court product they can support and be proud of every night.”

Before Sunday afternoon’s season finale against the visiting Los Angeles Lakers, Billups has led Portland to a 35-46 record. Last season, the Trail Blazers only managed 21 victories.

During his four seasons as the Trail Blazers’ coach, Billups had a 116-211 record and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Terry Stotts, who led the Blazers to the playoffs eight times in his nine seasons as coach, was replaced by him.

“The core of Chauncey’s leadership is his ability to build a collaborative culture and growth mindset for our young team,” Allen stated. “We’re very happy to extend his contract as head coach, and excited to see his continued work developing our players and transforming this team into one capable of long-term success.”

In 2004, Billups, then 48, helped the Detroit Pistons win the NBA Finals and was awarded the league’s MVP. From 1997 to 2014, he played for the Pistons, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, Toronto Raptors, and New York Knicks, and he was named an All-Star five times.
