With a new category, the Oscars will honor stunts

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors declared Thursday that the first-ever Academy Award for Achievement in Stunt Design will be presented at the 100th Academy Awards, which will be given to movies released in 2027.

In a statement, Academy president Janet Yang and CEO Bill Kramer said: “Stunt design has been an essential component of filmmaking since the early days of cinema.”

“We congratulate these technical and creative artists for their dedication and hard work in reaching this historic milestone, and we are proud to honor their innovative work.”

The full set of rules for the 100th ceremony will be revealed in 2027, along with eligibility and voting criteria for each category.

“Deadpool 2” director David Leith, a former stunt performer who has long pushed for the Academy to establish a new category, has praised the action.

“Stunts are fundamental to all film genres and have a long history in our industry, from the groundbreaking work of early pioneers like Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Charlie Chaplin to the inspiring artistry of today’s stunt designers, coordinators, performers, and choreographers,” he told Deadline.

For many of us, this has been a lengthy journey. Standing on the shoulders of the stunt professionals who have battled valiantly for recognition throughout the decades, Chris O’Hara and I have worked diligently for years to make this moment a reality. We are immensely appreciative. Academy, thank you.

Additionally, Chad Stahelski, the director of “John Wick” and a former stunt performer, commended the Academy for “really putting in the time” to decide how best to honor the stunt community.
