The president of Brazil promises to respond to US tariffs in kind, but emphasizes diplomacy first

President Lula of Brazil says all diplomatic avenues will be explored before responding to US tariffs.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, has stated that his nation will retaliate in kind for any more tariffs imposed by the US, although he has emphasized that Brazil will first attempt all diplomatic avenues before taking any action.

Lula clarified to reporters Wednesday after the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit in Honduras that although Brazil is ready to protect its economic interests, it would rather engage in discussion than conflict.

Lula emphasized his administration’s dedication to using diplomacy to resolve trade problems by declaring, “We will use every word for negotiation that is in the dictionary.” He went on to say that Brazil “will make the appropriate decisions” on a possible reciprocal response after talks have been thoroughly investigated.

The remarks coincide with escalating trade tensions around the world as a result of various nations’ responses to recent US tariff pronouncements. Lula’s message demonstrated a measured approach: firm in principle but open to discussion, even if he did not identify which industries or goods may be impacted.
