Rapper Lizzo Descended Into Depression Due To Lawsuits

Lately, Lizzo has been in a “state of depression.”

As she prepares to release her new album, the 36-year-old rapper, whose actual name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, acknowledged that she went through a period of feeling as though she is “hated” by everyone following a series of lawsuits filed against her.

She said to host Jay Shetty on the “On Purpose” podcast: “I knew I was going to have to do my biggest [album].”

“I had the impression that everyone despises me because of something that isn’t real. Ultimately, though, everyone despises me due to the position I hold.

I’ve been depressed because I didn’t know how to make it better. I was afraid of others and I was dark. I said, “You can’t love or trust anyone, and I don’t want to talk to anyone.”

The singer of “About Damn Time,” whose new album “Love in Real Life” will be out later this year, also revealed that she had to go to some “dark” areas for it.

“I have some songs that are very dark,” she stated.

Several of Lizzo’s former background dancers filed numerous lawsuits against the artist in 2023, claiming that the singer had harassed them sexually.

During a performance at the Wiltern Theater, she recently shared with her fans the influence they had on her mental health. A concertgoer captured the singer on camera providing an update.

She said that the litigation left her so “deeply hurt” that she “didn’t want to live anymore” in video that a fan posted on X.

She went on to say: “I called my album ‘Love in Real Life’ because I was in a really bad, deep depression around a year and a half ago, which is really difficult for me to discuss.

“I was so terrified of people that I didn’t want to be seen, and I was so heartbroken by the world and so deeply hurt that I didn’t want to live anymore.” I eventually overcame that phobia.

In order to help anyone who is struggling with “depression, or darkness, or felt so betrayed by someone they trusted or was lied on and hated on for those lies,” the singer said she revealed her tale.

Lizzo referred to the accusations made against her by the dancers as “outrageous” and “unbelievable.”

Six more dancers came out with similar claims following the initial legal filings, and in September, Asha Daniels, a former stylist for Lizzo’s “Big Grrrl Big Tour,” filed a second lawsuit alleging sexual and racial harassment.

It was announced in December 2024 that Asha’s lawsuit had been dismissed.
