Tracy Chapman Explains Her Reluctance to Stream Music in the Digital Era

Tracy Chapman has disclosed the rationale behind her refusal to subscribe to music streaming services in the digital era.

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, who is 61 years old, stated that she opts to purchase physical copies of albums in order to support her fellow performers.

In a rare interview with The New York Times, she disclosed, “I exclusively acquire music in physical form.” Artists are compensated when you purchase a CD or vinyl. That holds significant value for me.

Tracy, whose breakthrough smash “Fast Car” became a timeless classic, also stated, “I’m not as into music as I used to be.”

“It is a physical commitment to venture out into the world and locate objects.”

Nevertheless, she maintained that she is committed to discovering new music, including tracks from contemporary performers like Chappell Roan and Charli XCX.

Tracy further stated, “I am grateful that we are in a period in which artists of this nature have the opportunity to succeed, even if it is not the type of music I would create.”

While commemorating the 35th anniversary of her 1988 debut album with a vinyl reissue, Tracy has made the following remarks.

The singer also discussed her composing process during the interview, stating that she is currently in the process of writing “story songs.”

She stated that although she has been identified as a protest singer, she does not entirely endorse the term.

Tracy continued, “I have been fortunate in that I am able to earn a living by engaging in a creative pursuit and allowing my mind to wander.”

The singer also contemplated the characters in her songs, particularly those in “Fast Car,” and clarified that the song was fictitious.

Regarding the lyrics, she stated, “I was not married with a few children at the age of 24 – not that there is anything wrong with that – but this is a work of fiction in that regard.”

Tracy also recently made a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammys, where she performed “Fast Car” alongside Luke Combs.

However, Tracy, who last performed in 2009, has stated that she has no imminent intentions of returning to the stage.
