Thousands Participate in the Biggest Anti-Trump Demonstrations Since the Inauguration in the US and Abroad
Thousands of people demonstrate against Trump in US cities at organized “Hands Off” protests, condemning his views on immigration, the economy, and international affairs.
Thousands of demonstrators dissented from President Donald Trump’s policies and leadership style on Saturday by flooding the streets of major US cities.
The widespread protests, known as the “Hands Off” marches, are the biggest since Trump’s second term started in January.
Large numbers attended the demonstrations, which were planned to occur in more than 1,200 places in all 50 states, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. From contentious immigration sweeps to economic choices like hefty import levies, protesters listed a wide variety of grievances.
Supportive demonstrations were staged in Berlin, Paris, London, and other locations as the protest wave spread outside of the US. Protesters in the British capital responded to Trump’s controversial foreign policy moves by holding posters that read “WTAF America?” “Stop hurting people,” and “He’s an idiot.” They also chanted slogans like “hands off Canada,” “hands off Greenland,” and “hands off Ukraine.”
Recently, immigration raids targeting international students in Boston provoked uproar, including the arrest of Turkish student Rumeysa Ozturk near Tufts University, which was captured on camera and extensively shared. Katie Smith, a law student, stated, “You have the option to stand up today or be taken later.” Stressing the importance of resistance, she continued, “I’m not usually a protest girlie.”
The mood in Washington, D.C., was electrifying as thousands of people came to listen to Democratic politicians criticize the administration. The president’s advisor Elon Musk was singled out by Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost as a key player in the administration’s drive for significant federal cuts, denouncing what he described as a “billionaire takeover of our government.”
If you steal from the people, you should expect them to rebel. At the polling station and on the streets,” Frost informed the audience.
The protests came after President Trump and his supporters had a challenging week. Despite barely winning a Florida special congressional election, Republicans could not live up to expectations. A Democrat in Wisconsin trounced a Republican supported by Musk by over 10 points in a state supreme court contest, indicating that support for the Trump alliance is dwindling.
This trend seems to be supported by recent surveys. Earlier this week, a Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that Trump’s approval rating had fallen to 43%, the lowest level since his second inauguration. Overall approval dropped slightly to 49% in another Harvard Caps/Harris poll, although 54% of respondents still believed he was performing better than former President Joe Biden.
A woman named Theresa was among the demonstrators in D.C., and she expressed her concern about the decline of democratic institutions and vital services. “The cuts they’re making to the federal government really worry me,” she remarked, stressing that retirement and educational benefits were also under jeopardy. “Our democratic rights are eroding.”
Trump, though, seemed unconcerned. He chose to spend Saturday golfing at one of his Florida resorts rather than hosting any public activities, a move that protesters took notice of. “We shall see,” Theresa answered. “He virtually plays golf every day.”
In a subsequent statement, the White House defended the president’s actions and denounced Democrats for what it said was a scheme to destroy vital programs like Social Security and Medicare.
“President Trump’s stance is unambiguous: he will consistently safeguard Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for qualified recipients,” the statement said. “Democrats are providing illegal aliens with Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security benefits in the meantime.”
Speaking out about the protests, Trump’s immigration counselor Tom Homan disclosed that protesters had gathered outside his New York home.
“Anything they want, they can protest a vacant house,” he said to Fox News. Rallies and protests have no real significance. The case’s facts will remain unchanged.
