Russia claims that Chinese and Russian foreign ministers talk on Korea and Iran’s nuclear program
The Russian foreign ministry said late Tuesday that Sergei Lavrov, the country’s foreign minister, had spoken with Wang Yi, his Chinese counterpart, about Iran’s nuclear program and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
The latest in a string of high-level gatherings between the two nations in recent years, Wang’s three-day trip to Moscow included a meeting with President Vladimir Putin to strengthen strategic collaboration in the face of changing geopolitical conditions.
Last month, China and Russia declared that all sanctions should be removed and that resumed nuclear discussions with Tehran, as desired by the US, should only be based on “mutual respect.”
According to a statement from the Russian foreign ministry, “(the ministers) touched on individual regional issues related to the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Iran’s nuclear program, and the state of affairs in Central Asia,” but it did not elaborate.
“The discussions took place in an open and cordial setting, which is typical of Russian-Chinese ties. It was underlined how closely or similarly the perspectives on the primary issues of bilateral cooperation and the global agenda match.
“The two diplomats also talked about the Ukrainian conflict and the need for a long-term peace deal,” the foreign ministry stated. In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine on a massive scale.
