A strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake that shook neighboring nations has killed over 1,000 people and injured thousands more in Myanmar.
The majority of recorded deaths occurred close to Mandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar, which served as the epicenter. Rescuers are reporting frantic attempts to extricate casualties with their own hands as emergency personnel scramble to locate lives beneath collapsed structures.
A rescue team from Mandalay, which is close to the epicenter of the earthquake, told the BBC, “We are digging out people with our bare hands.”
Authorities in Thailand are working to rescue people from an incomplete high-rise in Bangkok that fell during the earthquake. According to local officials, at least six verified deaths have occurred, and about 100 construction workers are still missing.
Despite facing harsh sanctions from Western countries in recent years, Myanmar’s governing junta has made a rare appeal for international aid. However, it has been challenging to obtain precise information regarding the extent of the catastrophe due to the nation’s military rule and ongoing civil war.
Rescue operations are still ongoing in Thailand and Myanmar as rescue crews fight to get to people who are still buried behind debris.
