Mariah Carey’s brother’s amended lawsuit intensifies their legal battle
Morgan Carey, Mariah Carey’s brother, is not giving up on his legal battle against the music sensation.
In order to add more allegations of “defamatory” remarks to his case against his well-known sister, the 60-year-old attempted to modify his lawsuit.
Despite their long-standing separation, Mariah Carey and her brother were forced to meet each other last year when a judge ordered them to sit for court-mandated depositions.
With new evidence, Mariah Carey’s brother is highlighting his lawsuit.
In his 2021 lawsuit, Morgan Carey accused his sister Mariah Carey of defamation due to statements she made in her memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.” This led to the judge’s decision on the deposition.
Morgan claims he has discovered new “false, disparaging, and defamatory” statements she has made about him, some of which he discovered on YouTube, and has requested permission from the court to amend his complaint against the pop icon.
Morgan contends that prior to the release of her memoir in 2020, neither Mariah nor her staff ever reached out to him for a reaction.
She accused him of being abusive and involved in drug selling in the book, which he strongly disputes. He maintains that before the accusations were made public, he was never given the opportunity to refute them.
Morgan also criticizes a startling section of the biography in which Mariah claims that he took money from a woman in 1980 to kill her husband but later changed his mind. According to In Touch, Morgan testified during the woman’s trial after she later committed the murder herself.
In an online documentary, the singer’s brother accuses her of spreading lies.
In addition to Mariah’s memoir, Morgan is suing a YouTube documentary he found in 2025 that he claims has had 220,000 views. In a clip from the documentary, the singer makes shocking claims, saying:
“They tried to take over my life, throwing me into facilities and giving me medications. The fact that my brother and mother were working for the record label rather than defending me and looking out for my welfare, and that they happened to accuse me of instability and attempt to institutionalize me right after I had landed the largest cash record deal ever for a solo artist, was no accident.
Morgan claims that he and their mother, Patricia, are the “they” in Mariah’s statement. Additionally, he asserts that Mariah is somehow linked to the YouTube account that hosted the documentary.
In his updated lawsuit, Morgan calls the allegations “false and defamatory,” stating that neither he nor his mother ever tried to get Mariah institutionalized or take control of her assets, calling her claims “a vicious lie.”
Amidst a family tragedy, the actress was ordered to face her brother in a defamation lawsuit.
According to a judge, Mariah was forced to confront her estranged brother in his slander case. According to court records, both siblings were mandated to appear in person for depositions by January 31, 2025.
The decision said that although Mariah had to take part, she “reserves the right to seek limitations on the scope of discovery.”
The Blast revealed that the judge’s ruling was made only weeks after the siblings had a terrible family loss, indicating that the legal dispute took a personal turn. In August, their sister, Alison Carey, and mother, Patricia Carey, died on the same day.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend,” Mariah said in a poignant statement earlier, confirming the tragedy. Sadly, my sister passed away that same day in a horrible turn of events.
Mariah Considered Her Mother’s Complicated Bond
The 56-year-old disclosed that she spent the final week of her life with her mother, Patricia, prior to her death. The affectionate gesture demonstrated how their tense relationship had changed over time.
Mariah candidly discussed the complicated past between the mother and daughter in her biography, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.” Patricia’s separation from Mariah’s father, Alfred Roy Carey, when the singer was just three years old, influenced their relationship.
“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities,” Mariah wrote in her memoir, describing their connection as anything but straightforward. It has always been a rainbow of feelings rather than just black and white.
In the end, Mariah found serenity in their relationship despite their ups and downs. “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could,” she said in the memoir, expressing her sincere gratitude for her mother’s efforts. I shall always love you to the best of my ability.”
Alison, the late sister of Mariah Carey, filed a lawsuit over allegations in her memoir.
Alison Carey sued her well-known sister over statements in the star’s memoir prior to her death. Longtime rival Alison sued Mariah, claiming the businesswoman had publicly humiliated her and seeking $1.25 million in damages.
“Heartless, vicious, vindictive, despicable, and totally unnecessary,” Alison said in the lawsuit, describing Mariah’s remarks as causing her great emotional anguish.
She claimed that in order to increase exposure and book sales, Mariah attacked her and painted a negative picture of her background using her celebrity platform.
Alison went on to say that the accusations devastated her, adding that Mariah’s portrayal just made her already difficult situation worse.
Morgan has made it obvious that his fight against Mariah Carey is far from ended with this most recent court action.
