Chinese Chamber of Commerce disputes that a Chinese national ordered the shooting of an immigration officer

Claims that a Chinese national ordered the shooting of an immigration officer have been denied by the Chinese business community in Nigeria.

The claim that a Chinese national ordered the shooting of the immigration officer at a Chinese company has been refuted by the nation’s Chinese business community.

In a statement, Dr. Cui Guangzhen, Director General of the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria, stated that a Chinese person could never have authorized the aforementioned shooting.

The statement said: “We have learned that Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Interior Minister, denounced in a briefing on March 27 the shooting of an immigration officer who was reportedly acting at the direction of a Chinese company doing business in Nigeria.

The reports are taken very seriously by the China General Chamber of Commerce, which launched an investigation right away.

According to Niger State police authorities, the incident that the interior minister referred to took place in Minna, Niger State, on February 21, 2025.

The state police force was attempting to apprehend a local resident who was suspected of stealing iron rods from a Chinese enterprise during a police operation. One of the police officers mistakenly shot a bystander, who was later determined to be an immigration official, after running into the suspect’s fierce resistance.

The China General Chamber of Commerce would like to make the following points very clear:

“The incident did not involve any Chinese individuals or businesses. The claim that a Nigerian immigration officer was shot by a Chinese firm employee is completely untrue.

Chinese businesses operating in Nigeria are dedicated to the country’s social and economic advancement and follow all applicable rules and regulations.

“The incident saddens the China General Chamber of Commerce, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
