Six police officers were slain in Kenya by alleged al-Shabaab militants
In Kenya, suspected Islamist terrorists attacked a police camp in Garissa County, on the country’s eastern border with Somalia, killing at least six police officers and injuring four more, according to police.
According to a police report distributed to the media, the attack that took place early on Sunday was carried out by suspected fighters from Somalia’s al Shabaab group, which is affiliated with al Qaeda.
Al Shabaab often targets both military and civilian targets in the region with cross-border strikes.
The group’s attackers attacked a camp for police reservists at early and “used assorted weapons to overrun the camp,” according to the report.
“Six (6) fatalities have been confirmed with four (4) injured and in hospital.”
Due to terrorist threats, the U.S. embassy on Tuesday advised Americans not to travel to certain areas of Kenya, such as Garissa and other counties along the Somalia border.
Based on its own stringent interpretation of Islamic sharia law, Al Shabaab has been battling for years to topple Somalia’s central government and establish its own government in the Horn of Africa.
