Disney Live Action Despite receiving mixed reviews, Snow White makes $87.3 million worldwide in its first weekend of release

Despite criticism, Disney’s live-action “Snow White” topped the box office with an estimated $87.3 million in its first weekend of release.

Despite a lot of controversy and mixed reviews, Disney’s live-action Snow White remake opened at the top of the North American box office.

According to Box Office Mojo, the movie made an estimated $87.3 million (£67.5 million) worldwide on its first weekend, with North America accounting for almost half of that total. But the film didn’t live up to the hype, especially considering that it cost an estimated $270 million to make.

Snow White was already a contentious issue before it was released. Debate was raised by the choice of Colombian American actress Rachel Zegler to play the title role, and controversy was further heightened by Zegler’s pro-Palestinian and Israeli actress Gal Gadot’s pro-Israel statements. There was also controversy around the movie’s choice to omit traditional dwarfs in favor of CGI or live-action substitutes.

The film did poorly in mainland China, earning less than $1 million in its first three days at the box office and failing to place in the top five. Its poor performance, according to entertainment industry consultant Patrick Frater, was caused in part by continuous issues and Hollywood’s waning influence in Asia.

Snow White has drawn mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a 44% reviewer score, while viewers have been more understanding, awarding it a 73% rating on the website’s “Popcornometer.”

The Times’ Kevin Maher described it as “that bad,” advising viewers to “believe the anti-hype.” The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney, meanwhile, called it “mostly captivating.” Nicholas Barber of the BBC described it as “a mind-boggling mash-up” rather than a catastrophe, pointing out its “creepy CGI dwarfs and muddled tone.”

Snow White has achieved a solid box office start despite the varied reviews, but its long-term viability is still up in the air.
